Race report: These results are honest in terms of indicating the level of fitness, as promised I ran offensive.
After 2 km the pace felt so easy but then I got a little bit overexcited and I threw in a serious acceleration. With the result that from km 2 untill km 4 I ran alone in front with my head in the wind and with 30 metres behind me, ten really talented and better athletes. When they catched me it was a hard nut to crack because I was already tired at km 4. At the end I retrieve my marathon legs and my climb on the avenue Tervuren was powerful so I catched Vital (BUR) and Audace (BUR) in the last 1100m.
Conclusion: Salavarda was not happy with this move but he was pleased by my fitness level.
I got the time and place that I deserved, the six runners in front of me were simply better. So I am happy with the result but it stays a goal to fight for the top sport in the following years. My girl ran 1h 52' and this is a great result for her.
More important than the race report is the following:
My result is so relative and meaningless when we did hear afterwards that a young guy of my age died during the race. My thoughts are going to his family and friends.
I wish them much strength and my deepest sympathy. Lander and Eva

But first I would like to congratulate all the belgian athletes that ran in Nijmegen (NL) yesterday. Fantastic running over 800m, 1500m and 5000m. The top performer was Lander Tijtgat with 3'38" over 1500m. This is so fast, RESPECT!

These four guys are really in top shape:
  • Willy Nduwimana (BUR): able to run a 60' half marathon.
  • Onesphore Nkunzimana (BUR): two times winner.
  • Abdelhadi El Hachimi (MAR): really strong competitor.
  • Najim El Qady (MAR): fast and good tactician.

Picture
  • Guy Fays: ran great times in his last training runs.
  • Benjamin Barbier: kicked my but at the interclub.
  • Vital Gahungu (BUR): loves this race, I hope Vital surprises everybody by winning the race.

Picture
  • Abdi Nagassi (ETH): the biggest talent, but he recently became the proud father of a son.
  • Michaël Brandenbourg: has shown great performances in training, he will be strong.
  • Bram Coppens: Solid runner, never runs a bad race.

Picture
  • Frédéric Collignon: When he has his day, he can run as fast as the Africans.
  • Eric Gérôme: Marathoner pur sang, he will still be fresh after crossing the finish. Superb athlete.
  • Audace Bugama  (BUR): I do not know this guy really well.

Picture

  • Roger Könings: Solid performer, regrettable he has a little injury.
  • Girma Bhranu (ETH): He's fast but I think the distance will not be his cup of tea.
  • David Stevens: Talented but not much experience at the half marathon distance.

I give myself 3 stars, my shape is good so I will try to win this race but there are at least 7 guys with stronger credentials. At the moment I have run the fastest half marathon and marathon time in Belgium in 2011 but I am still over 3 minutes slower then the 4 star guys.
On sunday I will run offensive from the start. Greetings Lander

Almost racing time and I am starting to run fast. Today an easy run and it felt really good.

On the menu 12 times 1000m on the track with 200m rest. The times were = 2'58"; 2'54"; 2'58"; 2'57"; 2'56"; 2'58"; 2'58"; 2'55"; 2'57"; 2'55"; 2'54" and the last one in 2'48".
My poor performance of last weekend was a good motivation to pick up the training. Do not try this training at home ;)  Greetings Lander

Meanwhile at the track in Iten, the best runners in the world, are in full training mode.

A few words: He was a great marathon runner and probably the runner with the most talent for running the 42,195 km. He always pushed the pace from the start to finish. The short movie shows how to run a marathon in Wanjiru style (Olympic marathon Beijing 2008) Lander

My team DAC will have to compete next year in a league lower and it was really close so I am really unhappy with my bad run. I have no excuses for this subpar performance, I simply didn't run well.  My next race will be the 20 km through Brussels. All the runners that were in front of me today will run this race to. I will try hard to have another result there. Greetings Lander

In athletics it is all about time, but at the interclub, it is the place that counts!

At least for me, the adagium in the title applies. Nevertheless I will always try to put my athletic performances in the right perspective.

This week I did a track training with Koen Wilssens.

Together we ran 4 times 2000m (with short rest):  1st) 5'57"       2) 5'49"      3) 5'56"     4th) 6'02"
Not everything went according to plan because my body felt like it had been hit by a truck.

My coach is running in the Rift valley (Iten in Kenya) at this moment , I can't deny that I would have liked to join my training group on this trip. Maybe next time. Greetings Lander
